Import Information on Vehicles into New Zealand

All vehicles registered outside of New Zealand require a statement of compliance completed by the manufacturer of the vehicle and must be obtained and verified by either of the following agencies prior to shipment, due to a number of revised rules, the most important being frontal impact standard.

Customs Information

A vehicle / boat / motor cycle will be admitted free of Customs charges if the importer is able to establish that they:

  • Have arrived in New Zealand with the legal authority to take up or resume  permanent residence in New Zealand, and
  • Have for the whole of the period of 21 months preceding their arrival resided outside of New Zealand or been domiciled out side of New Zealand, and
  • Have personally owned and used the vehicle /boat /motor bike overseas for at least one year before the date of first departure for New Zealand or for at least one year before the date the vehicle / boat / motor bike is surrendered for shipping which ever is earlier.
  • Have given a written undertaking in such form as a Customs Officer may require, that if any such vehicle or boat is sold or otherwise disposed of within two years from the date of its importation, they will forthwith pay to Customs the Customs charges that would have applied at the time of their importation or pay to Customs such lesser sum as may be required.

If the vehicle is not owned and used for twelve (12) months, or is being imported by a person on a visitor’s visa or a work permit and does not meet the above criteria, then GST / taxes will be applicable @12.5 % of the CIF value (a depreciation factor is taken into account depending on how long the vehicle has been owned)
